The
Special Response Team (SRT), also known as the SWAT team, is
a group of expertly trained, highly specialized police officers.
The purpose of the SRT is to intervene in and successfully resolve
any situation, which would require specialized skills, weapons,
and tactics.
When
the SRT is called, its members know that they will be placed
in harm's way. Each member of the team has a specific function,
which can be changed depending on the type of situation the
team is responding to. The team responds to hostage situations,
barricaded suspects, high-risk search and arrest warrants, dignitary
protection, and other incidents, which would not normally be
handled by other members of the department.
Every
member of the team is trained in the operation and deployment
of specialized firearms, chemical agents, explosive devices,
sniper/observer, and other specialized tactics. Certain members
of the team are dedicated in other specialized areas such as
Hostage Negotiation, Tactical Paramedic and EMT, Explosive Breeching,
etc.
The
SRT is an all-volunteer organization and consists of officers
who are assigned to other units within the department. Candidates
must undergo a thorough interdepartmental background check,
pass a rigorous try-out and certification course that challenges
them both physically and mentally, as well as pass a high firearms
and physical fitness standard, prior to being considered for
placement on the team.
After
being selected, an SRT officer must maintain their physical
fitness and firearms proficiency and are required to qualify
numerous times annually and must attend a certain amount of
training a month to maintain strict standards. The SRT continually
trains with other agencies' tactical units and can provide training
to outside agencies
