The criminal investigation
division (CID) is tasked with the thorough investigation of crimes
committed within the City of West Memphis. The criminal investigation
division picks up where the patrol officer leaves off. When a
patrol officer takes a report, most of them are passed to the
criminal investigation division. A detective then takes the report
and opens a case on it. All detectives are certified police officers
and have served as patrol officers prior to being assigned to
the criminal investigation division.
Detectives use numerous
methods to investigate and solve crimes. Many of the West Memphis
Police Department's detectives hold certifications in advanced
training such as fingerprint analysis, evidence collection, crime
scene processing, and photography. Detectives spend long hours
interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects. Once a case is
built and the detective has enough evidence to justify doing so,
an arrest is made.
